GREECE - FRANCE: Le Petit Chaperon Rouge et les 3 Petits Cochons à l’ Internet

The approximately 60 students taking part in the project are working in groups in France and Greece, discussing, and analysing Safety Aspects of ICT tools, realising the dangers of the Internet and proposing ways of avoiding them. They hold discussions about the Power of the Image on monitors and mobiles as well, and especially on the web. They made posters, crossword puzzles, riddles and diagrams trying to explain terms such as privacy, cyber-bullying, netiquette, spy ware, spoofing, gambling, Trojan horse, phishing, spam, key loggers, inappropriate, pirate or illegal software, dangerous sites, filter, firewall etc. They designed a multimedia clip full of images, accompanied by English and French text, with animations, and sounds, concerning the proper and safe use of the Internet and mobile phones.

Guidelines:
• Dangers on the Internet and how to avoid them.
• Can we believe what we see on line?
• Combination of image and text. How powerful is a text or a sound when it is complemented by an image?

Answers:
• The students reconstructed the traditional folk tales The Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petit Chaperon Rouge) and The 3 little pigs (Les 3 Petits Cochons), changing the story, supplied them with illustrations and through a multimedia presentation, showed and proved that contemporary wolves are the Dangers on the Internet. Portraits or landscapes painted by famous European painters digitally modified made up the background of the presentation. Soundtracks digitally modified made the new version of the old folk tales softer and sweeter.
• The digital modification of the images and sounds was carried out with absolute respect in regard to the copyrights of the painters and composers whose works the students used; the students were also very sensitive about the degree of modification of the original works of art. We have supplemented our multimedia application with an info appendix which also had educational targets and which informs viewers of the use of digitally modified famous works of art and raises the issue of the need for the protection of intellectual property.
• By working on the Internet and using ICT tools with the partner school from another country the students also realized the universal character of the Internet, the need for a Safer web and for a more alert cyberspace user.

Participants’ profile:
• Schools:

• Number of students: 60 aged 16-18
• Teachers: 2 from Greece and 4 from France

Framework:
Subjects: ICT, Multimedia, and Network, Communication Technology, English language, French language, Graphic Arts and e-twinning program.

Conclusion:
The educational and social benefits of Information and Communication Technologies are many and evident, but there are risks associated with their use, particularly for school age students. The Internet itself, by nature does not guarantee safety for all, because the information retrieved is not always characterized by appropriateness and validity and the identities and the aims of authors are not always obvious. Our participation in the competition for a Safer Internet had multiple pedagogical and educational benefits for us and we enjoy it very much.
