Belgium - Austria

Bulgaria and Sweden: 25th sequence

We, from IT High School “Exupery” – Varna and our friends from Media Gymnasiet “Nacka Strand “ – Stockholm decided to work on this project considering our points of contact and our efforts to provide more practical education in ICT. When our students work on different school projects they often have to “surf” the net to select only the necessary, correct and complete information. With regard to this, the “hidden” messages when opening a website or following a number of links could be very harmful to every student. That’s why we are obliged to teach young people to be cautious on the net and to be aware of the possibility to face various harmful information.

Poland-Portugal: "The strenght of a word, the strenght of a picture"

0_pusty_600x22.gif
The students of Publiczne Gimnazjum nr 5 w Radomiu (Polska) & Escola Secundaria do Cartaxo (Portugal), were wondering about the safety in the Internet. They learnt what information can bring the image? How should pictures be taken advantage of communicating by the Internet? Can the publication of the image harm someone?
The leading teacher in Poland was Anetta Kiraga, and in Portugal - Maria Fonseca.

The project realization:
0_pusty_600x22.gif
1) We made an Internet blog (a kind of a diary) for school taking part to exchange views about safety in the Internet. You can see the blog here
We introduced the competition for the story, slogan, or poem on the safety in the Internet. In the competition took part over 150 students. The results of the comtetition will be avaible in March.

2) We made projects of computer graphics, banners, animations and art works, posters for competition slogans. Students were introducing pictures or images to the texts. They were wondering the role of the picture in the messange.

3) We organised debate on "The strenght of the word picture and voice - Is the Internet safe?" - Student were exchanging ideas on the topics - if pictures sent in the Internet are safe, what happens when they are sent to the public (on-line). They were talking about the autor's rights.
During the debate we introduced the art works and computer graphics, happening "The strenght of the picture".

Taking part in the competition "Safer Internet Day 2007" with our Portuguese partner was a great pleasure for us.

Uczniowie szkół partnerskich z Publicznego Gimnazjum nr 5 w Radomiu - Polska i z Escola Secundaria do Cartaxo w Portugalii zastanawiali się nad bezpieczeństwem w Internecie.

2) W drugim etapie pt.

Nasz udział w konkursie "Dzień Bezpiecznego Internetu 2007" wraz z naszym portugalskim partnerem przyniósł nam wiele radości i korzyści.

The film concerns and discusses one of the important issue - unfortunately
often omitted - connected with the parental unawareness of dangers
awaiting for the child in the web Internet. It shows how parents are
concerning about a proper developement and education of their children,
dreaming about a bright future for them. Our film makes the adults and
young Internet users think - if you see it, you will become convinced.

Power of Websites

As we are a group of children, who like to create and edit images and want to learn how to create great websites, our main goal was to find out the importance of images in building the websites. We wanted to know our friends opinion about our question - is the content of websites more important than the images. So we created a survey using simple questions. Our plan was to analyze the answers and the result of our analysis will be the information we needed.

Safer Internet Day

Never happen to you enter in Messenger and think you are talking with a person that are not the same that are talking to you.
Or worst, never happen to you stolen your photo and making a montage or using it to take our identity and prejudice you from different ways.
Pay attention and don’t let that happen.
Be careful with what you publish in the Internet and with your behaviour.

Protect yourself !

Conclusion

ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA AUGUSTO CABRITA

The Internet brought many inovations in people life.
But, despite of the indubitable benefits that the Internet provided, also new modalities of crimes came. One of them, in high, is the robbery of identity, that someone occurs when is seized private information of other persons, as photographs and uses them for irregular or illicit ends. While more persons pass it using the Internet as environment to know other persons and participate in chats, his photographs (images) acquire big value for impostors. Who be seized these given, in an environment in that the physical presence is not demanded, becomes-itself to own person.
By example: itself at first sight, do not have big value for criminals, can bring grave headaches, depending on as will go used. If some criminal it be seized his photographs and personal information, will be able to be connected to fórums/chats as went you and, it leave then, defame the its name or worse. Case these problems caused by the impostor are tracked, to first person it will be identified like author and all people thought that was you. For it be protected of the robbery of identity in the Internet, you must to know as act the impostors and like avoid that your personal facts are used innapropriatly.

"Portugal-Sweden : Don't get fooled"

After having met Susanna and Johanna in an international workshop of eTwinning members, we became partners and we were ready to take any risks by working together on this kind of projects. So, our first challenge was the SEGURANET Project.
That’s how two Secondary Schools (one in Portugal – Jorge Peixinho Secondary School; another in Sweden – Lulea Gymnasieskola) gave birth to this project.
We have worked with 16-17-year-olds who got quite engaged and discussed, analised and interpreted this issue in their countries. Both groups worked on a Power Point presentation which they hope will make a difference.

Italy-Poland: The silence of the mind

Our images concentrate on the power of attracting the attention of children and parents and on the exigency of protecting these categories of Internet users.
The first image represents the 'Men in Black' of the famous film protecting a computer in the shape of a lock; the weapons symbolize the all positive activity of defending the security of Internet users.
The second image relates to the ideas of innocence and tenderness of childhood, a child kissing a monitor on a grid background symbolizing an electronic circuit: It is a hope of how children should approach Internet.
The third image is again linked to the famous film 'Matrix' with the rain of codes hitting a red umbrella.

To see the truth from within the computer

Portugal-Poland: Power of image - To see the truth from within the computer
This theme evolved after having initialy chosen the theme "Pictures worth a thousand truths, Pictures worth a thousand lies"
Based on this last generic theme, the class decided to approach a different perspective: "I look at my monitor and see something pleasant. What if I could get inside the computer? Would the truth stay the same?"

The inside of the computer is, of course, the real inside of whoever is "on the other side" inviting us to watch, talk, write, comunicate, accept....

This project is a partnership work between the portuguese HighSchool E.S. Tomás Cabreira in Faro and the Polish school Zespół Szkół, Szkoła Podstawowa i Gimnazjum.

Are you safe on hi5?

Portugal-Poland: Power of image - Are you safe on hi5?
This work is about the dangers that online communities like hi5 can expose to young kids, who are always naturally eager to interact with others. By letting themselves drive by their imagination and confidence, they might be led to expose themselves beyond limits of security. What we inocently post on the Net can be viciously changed by others...

Greece-Poland "What do you think of me through my picture?"

We come from with two distant states of Poland and Greece.

First meet in Internet once.

We do not know and do not know about us anything.

Co-operation begins we - send the pictures of participants of project.

We want to convince that we exist really.

We try to obtain from pictures information.

We send our comments, what we read from our photos.

This is fun.

This pleases to us.

Unfortunately not all affirming are true.

Only these very general relating external appearance agree.

The guessing the features of character, interests, ability inflicts the difficulty.

We are sure and peaceable that the young persons on pictures are, bright, willing to connexion of new acquaintances, to the men and world's meeting.

We know, that Internet makes possible this and we know how with him to use safely.

This is the good beginning of co-operation.

As an output we created a website that can be found on http://www.gimokonek.teclaw.pl/strony/grecja/index.htm , and two videos, that you can either see them here or download them:

and
here for the second.

The videos consist of the pictures the students used to do the project, and popular music from both countries.

"Greece-poland:surf safe"

We desided to work upon the power of images on children. Image in an advertisment p.e. is equal or even more powrfull than the slogan or the text in it. On the other hand we try to explore childrens attitude towards internet. If and how they use it. How informed they are about the safe use of it. At the end we compine the two issues into one by making an advertisement using images and powerpoint to show how we should use internet. As we worked along together the two schools we realise that we are all "look like" the same! Having the same anxieties, the same prespective of things, the same fiars, the same problems!! It was a lovely collaboration!!

Greece-Cyprus: Time of (y)our life

Our Team
The project was incorporated in regular school programme, namely “Modern Greek Language” course. Pupils were asked to choose two topics which are of main interest to adolescents, and through which the Power of the Image over the Internet might be demonstrated. The chosen topics were Music and Sport. We then contacted Cyprus partner school, which agreed to work on the same topics.
The pupils were divided into 2 groups of 5, one for each topic, and were asked to answer questions revolving around the emotional and factual impact of music and sport on adolescents, i.e. the feelings and experiences they generate and the way they contribute to the their conceptualisation of the world and dreams of life. The pupils exchanged ideas with their Cypriot partners, and, as a second step, were asked to find images which would present their perspective in visual form. They constructed presentations and photo albums. This gave them the opportunity to know each other better, and to share mostly feelings, ideas and hopes. Our wish is that they will be shared with young people everywhere in Europe:
Download our PhotoStory!!!
Also download our Greeting Card and print it out!

Semley Primary School and Athens-Chilesburg Elementary School have been working together to consider the power of digital images. We considered how difficult it was to publish a traditional image and how easy it is nowadays to publish a digital image. What do we need to consider when we publish an image today? How can we keep children safe when they use modern communication technologies? All of these questions and more are answered through our presentation which can be found by clicking on the link below.

We hope that the messages from our children will help to promote the benefits and the risks of images on the internet.

PRIVATE SCHOOL "POLITROPI ARMONIA" (located in region of ATTICA, Town of CHAIDARI, Greece) has partnered together with Augusto Cabrita Secondary School (located in region of Setúbal, Town of Barreiro, Portugal) to enter the Safer Internet Day Blogathon Competition. Together we choose the “power of images” theme and the title of our work is - "the security use of images". This title was selected because we are focusing on internet and phone use of images. We think kids should be more aware of what can happen if they start to give out personal information and/or their own images. Augusto Cabrita Secondary School and PRIVATE SCHOOL "POLITROPI ARMONIA" developed a forum in a moodle platform on the school's website which links to a PowerPoint presentation, a movie clip and a poster focusing on the theme. "Denmark - England: Power of Image"

As you will see on this BLOG, we have been working with images in several different ways.
It all started by doing innocent creative collages by cutting in magazines and making drawings our selves - then we made a proper Power Point for our friends at Semley Primary School in Dorset by taking pictures of our school.
It all ended up in working with the theme
'how to manipulate images and create a story!!!'
After working with manipulated images - seeing our selves in untrue situations, we are now all aware of the many traps one can meet on the sites we daily visit.

We have made 10 statements which we find importan to follow if and when you use images on the Internet.

It has been a very interesting process for me as a teacher to combine the traditionally way of working with pictures, paintings with the digital images.
All images consists a 'story - a message' which demands an interpretation.
I find that the students have developed a more serious attitude towards digitals images now, compared to when we started this project.

The power of image in our life

In September 2006 we decided to register as one of the participants in the eTwinning project. Two teacher from our school created a small team with three 13 years old students who are communicative and smart enough to participate successfully. In our first meeting we started looking for possible partnership schools and decided to work with Gimnzjum nr5, a school from Poland. They agreed to work with us so we immediately started exchanging information about each school. Our students enjoyed our MSN meeting very much and the interest was mutual. We also created blogs and wrote about our meetings up-to-date. After some time we also created a video, a power point presentation and a poster. We realised that the project made a lot of positive impressions on us, the teachers, and the students, too. We learned a lot about Poland, safe use of internet and different ways of using ICT. We enjoyed the project very much and have decided to continue getting in touch with the school from Poland.

Belgium-Bulgaria: Be careful on the net!

We have made a project concerning the power of images on the internet.
People often don’t realise what risks they are taking when transmitting an imagine to their friends over the internet.
Viruses manage to avoid many anti-virus systems and then work their way into your computer. Serious damage can be done when it’s not stopped in time.
Through this project, we want to make sure people realise how dangerous internet can be when you’re not careful.
We have created several posters to inform them and make sure they use the internet safely.
Viruses hide everywhere, maybe even behind these words.

Holding our Hands

''sharing a drawing, sharing a song, we multiply our school life"

Everybody, even our little pupils of 5-6 years old watch and hear about the 'bad' use of the Internet. What is safe, what is unsafe and they carry on them at school. It was no difficult to brainstorming ideas on what we can do about this. We exchanged ideas with our partners in Portugal, we decided on the final activities and we also agreed both on this: "As much as possible interesting stuff were given to the pupils, we create, as less as possible interest for bad and negative Internet behavior* " and this attidute starts developing from the early years and at least from the pre-school education.
So we started drawing on Paint, we sent it to our partners to finish it and let them free to add on our part whatever they liked. We found a common song in both languages and we recorded it half in Greek other half in Portuguese. We compined the whole work on a ppt.file and it consists a part of our e-twinning activities http://jiportodemos.ccems.pt/ledileo/activities.htm

* This is one of our main targets in our e-twinning partnership: LE.DI.L.E.O Learning from a Distance Learning from Each Other.

My Image, Your Image - SID 2007
Based on the “Learning English Together” project, from an etwinning partnership between Colégio Monte Flor and Osningschule Bielefeld (Germany), during ICT and English classes, the students were asked to create a collaborative video on the safe use of images in the Internet.
This way, on the course of January, the students put forward a reflection work, by means of debates on the theme My image, Your Image - Young Internet Users are getting conscious of Safety, Privacy and Netiquette and it ended with the production of a presentation in PowerPoint where texts, sounds and images were elaborated on the basis of sharing and collaboration.

GREECE - FRANCE: Le Petit Chaperon Rouge et les 3 Petits Cochons à l’ Internet

The approximately 60 students taking part in the project are working in groups in France and Greece, discussing, and analysing Safety Aspects of ICT tools, realising the dangers of the Internet and proposing ways of avoiding them. They hold discussions about the Power of the Image on monitors and mobiles as well, and especially on the web. They made posters, crossword puzzles, riddles and diagrams trying to explain terms such as privacy, cyber-bullying, netiquette, spy ware, spoofing, gambling, Trojan horse, phishing, spam, key loggers, inappropriate, pirate or illegal software, dangerous sites, filter, firewall etc. They designed a multimedia clip full of images, accompanied by English and French text, with animations, and sounds, concerning the proper and safe use of the Internet and mobile phones.

Guidelines:
• Dangers on the Internet and how to avoid them.
• Can we believe what we see on line?
• Combination of image and text. How powerful is a text or a sound when it is complemented by an image?

Answers:
• The students reconstructed the traditional folk tales The Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petit Chaperon Rouge) and The 3 little pigs (Les 3 Petits Cochons), changing the story, supplied them with illustrations and through a multimedia presentation, showed and proved that contemporary wolves are the Dangers on the Internet. Portraits or landscapes painted by famous European painters digitally modified made up the background of the presentation. Soundtracks digitally modified made the new version of the old folk tales softer and sweeter.
• The digital modification of the images and sounds was carried out with absolute respect in regard to the copyrights of the painters and composers whose works the students used; the students were also very sensitive about the degree of modification of the original works of art. We have supplemented our multimedia application with an info appendix which also had educational targets and which informs viewers of the use of digitally modified famous works of art and raises the issue of the need for the protection of intellectual property.
• By working on the Internet and using ICT tools with the partner school from another country the students also realized the universal character of the Internet, the need for a Safer web and for a more alert cyberspace user.

Participants’ profile:
• Schools:

• Number of students: 60 aged 16-18
• Teachers: 2 from Greece and 4 from France

Framework:
Subjects: ICT, Multimedia, and Network, Communication Technology, English language, French language, Graphic Arts and e-twinning program.

Conclusion:
The educational and social benefits of Information and Communication Technologies are many and evident, but there are risks associated with their use, particularly for school age students. The Internet itself, by nature does not guarantee safety for all, because the information retrieved is not always characterized by appropriateness and validity and the identities and the aims of authors are not always obvious. Our participation in the competition for a Safer Internet had multiple pedagogical and educational benefits for us and we enjoy it very much.

Belgium-France : Le pouvoir de l'image est en toi !

The elementary school of Bierghes (Rebecq) in Belgium has made a partnership with the school "Les Sablons" of Gif Sur Yvette in France.

Our project was carried out by pupils aged 9 to 12. They have had several contacts with children of the same age group from a school in France for the realization of this project, which involved three stages.

First the children were invited to collect and hand in images of their own choice and liking that made a "strong" impression on them. We received photographs that were very personal or about the pupils' favourite hobbies.

Secondly we imposed certain selected photographs and asked the children to react to this selection. The same photos were exchanged with the children at the partner school. This resulted in reactions back and forth, followed by the formulation of opinions and feelings that all the pupils shared.

Finally, in the third stage, we asked the children to reflect on the advisability of showing different types of images on the net, where they are accessible to everyone. For each image we evoked the importance or the danger of making it available to all the internet users.

Herewith, we include the result of the reflections made by our children in the form of a visual presentation.

What our "youngsters" liked most about this project was the opportunity to work together with other school-fellows by means of e-mails and a video conference.

They have also been sensitized (not for the first time for the pupils of the elementary school of Bierghes) about how important it is to interpret an image, but even more so about how much prudence is required when dispatching an image of their own on "the net".

Given the pleasure that each school clearly found in the realization of this common project, we are very confident that other collaborations will be possible in the future.
