"Keep It Private Keep It Safe"

A trip into safety online.

St. Paul Interparochial School's Computer Club has partnered together with a school from Lithuania and entered the Safer Internet Day Blogathon Competition.  We chose the title "Keep It Private Keep It Safe" because we are focusing on e-safety and e-privacy issues. This topic was chosen because kids our age are experiencing the internet generation. We think kids should be more aware of what can happen if you start to give out personal information. We have received a fifth grade class in Lithuania as our partner for this contest.  There will be 4 winners, each winning $1950.60 USD worth of equipment for that school.  We are hoping we will win to improve our already great computer lab.  The contest begins on February 6th, 2007.  The computer club meets once a week to help work on this project.  We are working our hardest to win this contest, and we might just do so!!

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, two members of the computer club, Thomas S. and Thomas P.,  and a guest member, Nick, enjoyed speaking to two Lithuanian children who attend the "Kaunas Zibury's Secondary School" and are partnered with us in this competition. With the help of their teachers, Nijole and Daiva, the children questioned each other on the happenings in each others school.  We found out that the children are in the "Fifth Form" or 5th grade and 11 years old. Their favorite game to play at recess is handball. They all walk to school and are in school for five hours. In the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade their school day is extended to six and a half hours.  Lithuania is a catholic country, but the students can chose their religion lessons.  The students require interpreters because they are not very fluent in their English.  Below is a list of Computer club members and the different projects they worked on for the competition.

The task for participating students is to prepare awareness materials focusing on the chosen theme. During the project, you will reflect on e-privacy, netiquette or images, and look at how they work in public virtual spaces (social-networking sites). Students should be supervised and coordinated by at least one teacher per group. One school in the partnership, the "leader" school will register the team for the competition and be responsible for posting the project outcome in the blogathon. Upon registration, you will receive instructions for uploading your work to the blogathon.

How can i-SAFE help?
As your students work with their partner school keep in mind that i-SAFE already has numerous student activities/lessons ready to use. We have student activity lessons for posters, brochures, public service announcements, etc. that can all be adapted for this competition.
i-SAFE's service learning lessons, K-12 curriculum and certified mentor training lessons are great places to start!
