Australia - Australian Communications and Media Authority: Life online is what YOU make of it
From meeting new friends who share your interests, searching for stuff, communicating with others and playing games, the internet has become the medium for many of the routine tasks of daily life. The internet has made it possible for us to become part of a virtual community of people connected by interest not geography. We are citizens of both the real and online worlds. But, are these worlds so very different?
In everyday life we naturally think about our own safety and don't put ourselves in risky situations. We wouldn't walk up to people we've never met before and tell them where we live and our mobile number. But, are we so careful online? Do we behave differently online than in the "physical" world? How does our behaviour impact on the online environment?
In the street if we see a poster showing a cat next to a hippo that appears to be the same size, do we believe a hippo is really that small? In the same way should we believe everything we see on the internet? Online if we are offered money or prizes for our personal information should we think someone is just being nice and accept the money? We've learnt in everyday life to be smart about what's true or not, how can we be sure what's real or true when we see it online?
Your everyday life, stuff about you that's private, your personal information, your security....it's all important and not to be messed with. Your life online is no different. Do we know how to do things safely online so that we don't even consider doing something that may have a negative impact on our online lives? What online safety issues are important to you?
It's YOUR life online; it's what YOU make of it. If you would like advice or information about any internet safety issue please call our helpline on freecall 1800 880 176 or visit www.cybersmartkids.com.au or www.netalert.gov.au.

Internet safety is a lot harder for adults to grasp compared to children and teenagers who have grown up at the same time as this technology has grown.
We are more in tune with the technology mainstream and have learnt a form of instinct where we can easily identify cyber fraud, compared to our older counterparts that still view this technology as very new.

I think people place too much trust in the internet, and don't think to question what they see. People see the internet as a source of information, but rarely stop to question what they read. I think this is caused by the public not being educated about the dagers of the internet.

It always seems that whenever we develop something useful that helps people in a variety of ways, some people find ways to find malicious ways to exploit it. I mean, I never share or give out personal information that may cause permanent damage such as credit card details. I am even hesitant to give out my credit details to eBay and other eCommercial businesses. I guess that on the internet, information is so freely thrown around that there are so many ways to exploit it. The important message that people has to have clear in their head that the internet is not a safe place. You have to make sure that the website or organisation you are giving your information to is known to be reliable and safe. There are various ways you can validate this and one simple way is just to search on the internet. Just make sure that you know what you are going in for. However, also remember that as much precaution you may take to protect yourself, your information is always vulnerable to a threat.

I don't think I'm personally at great risk of using the internet unsafley, but it definately poses a great risk to the uninformed public. I don't submit personal information to sites without a good reputation, and only chat to people who I have met in the real world, as well as running antivirus, a firewall and antispyware. I don't read the user agreements as a general rule, as they are too long. A shortening of them could benefit the public, as I'm sure others wouldn't read them for the same reason.

I think that what most people dont realise is that real-world logic is applicable in online. Cyberspace being as much a dog-eat-dog world as the the real world, people must realise that even though social and legal restrictions still apply online, people will take advantage of ignorance or immaturity while being shielded by the unique type of anonymity available online.
Posted by: P.Moore | February 12, 2008 05:31 AM
People need to relise that they need to be as carefull online as they are off line. You would not give out your personal infomation to a stranger on the street so why would you hand it over to some one on the interent.
Remember all people on the internet are strangers!
Remember that every action online still has a real life effect.
The only people who should be trusted with personal details are people you already know and trust.
Posted by: Matt | February 12, 2008 05:31 AM
The internet is different to normal working life only in the aspect that it is in digital form.
All forms of privacy and common sense still need to be kept, ie, you would not give your personal information to a stranger on the street, hence why do so online?
The question of anonymity online is what sparks much debate and is the key source behind the majority of criminal activities.
When in person, the two accompanying parties can verify several facts about one another. The age, height and size of the other individual. Online, these facts are dependant on the source and their credibility, often giving a false sense of security.
The key is to treat anyone online with the same caution as you would a stranger on the street.
Posted by: Rhys | February 12, 2008 05:32 AM
think people place too much trust of what they see, download and put in the internet. All people on the internet are strangers from all over the world. upload your personal infomation it mean you share infomation to all people in the internet.
the only people you should share your personal infomation to are people you already know and trust.

The internet is not like a video game, its not 100% virtual, in fact most of the people you meet will actually be real people. So... It makes sense that you would treat them as you would people in real life. In fact you'd probably want to be more careful because hey in real life at least you can see the other person. The Internet takes away inhibitions, you can say things that you wouldnt in real life because on the internet someone cant punch you for being racist. There are enough examples floating around on the dangers of the internet that if aprents arent trying to educate their children about them then they are seriously missing something, the net is unavoidable nowadays so people need to know how to handle it.

I believe that Internet Safety is a good thing because it gives reasurrence for paranoid parents who dont like their kids on the net.
Posted by: Anonymous | February 13, 2008 01:51 AM
The Difference between the real world and the virtual one is only an Internet browser. But the way many people talk, and what we say on the internet, can be vastly different from Real Life.
As a frequent user of a chat program (xfire), I have noticed that many people seem to be to...open...on that chat room, talking about stuff they would never say in Real life.
I personally think that the reason we are so comfortable with sharing our details over the internet, is because we never expect that people will use that information against us, either they sound too nice, or they are too far away in the world. We need however, to be more careful, and more secure about what we say.

The issue of internet safety in my life that bothers me the most is what would happen to an ordinary guy like me if info of me leaked out but i also have a solution to most of my problems be carefull. there are simple things to do for such a simple problem. be alert about your activities in the internet world. it is very easy while signingup or posting new info to get carried away because you want to look real not fake and the best way to acheive that is to be open and truthfull but in the real world that might give but on the net it will cost.
Posted by: Appavoo | February 13, 2008 01:56 AM
The internet is an amazing place where you can meet people, find interesting informating just about anything but it has a dark side. Most people do not understand this and are oblivious to the dangers of the internet. We think that every child should be educated whilst at school on the dangers of the internet and how to be safe.
Posted by: Brigette and Kiasah | February 13, 2008 01:58 AM
As it has already been mentioned, for the teenages and the younger generation who have grown up with computers in their everyday lives it is less likely that they will use the internet unsafley... but adults on the other hand, i believe are the ones at risk. This is because they are not aware of the dangers that the internet can have if not used without some form of caution. This is why the internet saftey weeks are important to inform everyone of the dangers and potential life changing risks that the internet can impose.
As for the Subject of people acting different in the real world opposed to online, this is something that i can agree with. Weather it be in an email, chatsite or even when buying goods using your credit cards or other personal bank details. The majority of the public would be alot more cautious about what they say or do in everyday life that on the internet. Its just a frame of mind that the interent gives you when using it. You feel like that because you are not physically communicating with someone that it makes you safer in a way. But in all reality your not.
Posted by: Nick Simpson | February 13, 2008 02:01 AM
There is a significant difference between the Internet and the real world, and that is why in many cases people develop alias' for use while in this different 'online' world. Trouble only tends to occur when people start to mix these two identities, and advertise their real identity online. As soon as people advertise their real identity online the safety level drops rapidly, people can suddenly find out about your real life, where you live, what you do, etc. And this is what people need to watch out for.
Posted by: Nevergiveoutyournameonline | February 13, 2008 02:04 AM
To cut a long story short there is defintely a finel line that people struggle to come to grips with that the net and the real world vary immensly. it isnt something to be feared but something that you must learn to control like fire bad master good servant.
Posted by: Appavoo | February 13, 2008 02:05 AM
I've never had to worry about safety on the internet because I use all the programs needed to prevent dangerous situations. I believe that you shouldnt open anything that you're unsure of or dont know anything about. I also never share information with people I don't know whatever it may be because you wouldnt know what kind of sick operation they've got going.
Posted by: Sam Stanton | February 13, 2008 02:05 AM
The internet is an open community where people shouldn't have to worry about losing credit card details etc.
Honestly all it takes is abit of common sense. Applying real life thinking is neccesary when online. Some people think that because you can't see the people face to face, they can't do anything to you. Playing it smart is all that is required.
Posted by: James Buchanan | February 13, 2008 02:08 AM
I think that several critical safety issues could be resolved very easily by following a few steps:
All people who use the internet should use an alternate or abbreviated name when posting in forums etc, and never post their surname, or anything that allows people to identify them in real life.
The simplest way to ensure that your personal details (such as your phone number) are kept safe is to keep them to yourself. Only things that may be vital, for example online banking websites (after checking the web address to avoid phishing) should ever have your personal details entered into them.
There is no way to ensure your privacy, however, if you use social networking websites etc. and people can easily be put at risk if they sign up to gambling websites, or fall for the "free (expensive item or cash)" banner ads and pop ups. Internet users should realise that most people that they meet on the internet only look out for themselves.
People should be vigilante about avoiding these dangers, rather than ignoring them and thinking "well it's not going to happen to me". People with this kind of thinking are far more likely to fall victim to scams or identity theft than people who treat strangers online with the same caution as in real life.
Posted by: Luke | February 13, 2008 02:09 AM
internet safty is up to the user if people go on line and chat to people they dont know, they have to realise that what people say on line is sometimes very far from the truth, if you can trust some one that you meet on line enought to go and vist them or give them your address then you should not be aloud to go on these chat lines
Posted by: Anonymous | February 13, 2008 02:09 AM
The internet is different to 'normal' life and many people can use this to their advantage. Someone can act high and mighty and make threats over the internet while in real life they are a completely different person.
This is why privacy about a persons private information is very important. Internet usage is all about common sense.
Posted by: idunnomyname | February 13, 2008 02:11 AM
In todays society being catious online is just as important as being careful in the real world. people act differntly to how they would in a real life situation because they do not feal the immediate threat because they feal safe in the confines of your home
Life online is what you make of it.

The internet is a dangerous place for first timers or inexperienced users.
Users or owners of computers need to take in to thought that the internet is basically a dark allyway with thiefs and stalkers around each corner. By not having spam/virus protection, firewalls, adware and spyware. The first senario could become a realife problem for the unexpereienced user.
The 21st century internet is becoming more dangerous each day. Meaning people need to be more cautious and wary of risks and be taught the right internet safety techniques to become less accessable to hackers.
If worse comes to worse you do have the power to stop the problem.

We agree with your thoughts we are in year 5 and our teachers have taught us online safety. We have been taught that you need to use the internet wisely.

Look, with some points of the article, I agree with. These include that internet has become part of our daily life because it has such efficient and easy features that most can use. However, this blog states that we give our details dar more easily to strangers online then in real life. This is true for children under the age of 10. But certainly NOT for those over 10. Eg If we play an internet game and have a joke with someone who SAYS they are your age, you do not simply give them some details, maybe if you have not been taught of these dangers or (excuse my stubborness) if they are too dumb to realise.
Another point that was slightly hyperbolised was that when an elephant and an enlarged picture of a cat are placed together we than assume that it is that size. Again...Only those too young or with low I.T intelligence or IQ simply jump to these conclusions. I could blog forever but I dont want to make the others look a bit slack. Lastly, forgive the intrusion of any rules, but I'm not posting my full name or email for these exact reasons. Thankyou

The internet is good as long as you use it apropriotely. When you get pop-up's its just common sense to not click on them and the people that click on them are "gumby's".If you are going to use chat rooms just be careful because you just dont know who you are talking to. Your better off to use MSN so you know everyone that you are taking to. keep blogging it up ya'll. peace out.

Internet security is a personal thing. Some people do not have the common knowledge to deal with all of the po ups and sypware that is out their but from my own experience most people just close pop ups and ignor emails from fake banks asking for pin number ect. However it is comforting to know that for those less aware their are suport systems avalible.
Posted by: Me | February 13, 2008 11:52 PM
Never in my past have I had to worry about my personal information being exposed to others. This is mainly because of my experience and knowledge of dangers through critical websites and pop-ups.
But for the first time users or for the unexperienced, the knowledge of these dangers is low and personal information can be transferred from a click of a button. So if your unsure on something don’t take the risk. Use sites that you are familiar with for the safety of yourself and your computer.
Posted by: Jordan.S | February 13, 2008 11:58 PM
The internet exposes many people to extremely good and bad content, however in my opinion the goods easily out way the bads. Your safety on the internet relies on how responsible You are and how you use the internet.
I generally think that the majority of people that use the internet are safe, but the risks are the same for all people.
There are many ways to protect your self from dangerous websites, and the best way is probably the easiest, and that is to only use trusted websites, then check the sites that are hyperlinked to you, so if you are told to look at a picture put you mouse over it and check the file type because if you are viewing a image it should be a ".jpeg" or ".gif" or something like that and not like a ".exe", as this is a major way of how viruses are sent, also make sure you have a up to date anti-virus (Avg is a good free one).
To protect your identities on the internet again only use trusted sites, and if you use chat engines make sure it is one that has a friends network and make sure you know every one (in person) in your friends.
Hopefully every one will stay safe if they are aware of the dangers.

there have been times when on the computer it says i've won all this money or saying that i can get a free laptop or i-Pod, but i know not to click on it becuase who knows it can be a scam. i've learnt from adding people on msn that have added me, that maybe i should be a lot more aware because when they talk to me it's just like who are you? then i get rid of them. so always be careful.

If you dont know who you are talking to online do not talk to them, block them or delete them. If someone asks you how old are you ,were do you live and what school! DO NOT TELL THEM !
Last year at school we lernt about cyber bullying and how it effects people in many ways and not to be stupid and give out personal information about yourself. We got told when popups appear not to click on them just leave them, that is the safest thing to do.
be safe on the net.

NEVER give out your personal information online! The internet is a great thing to have for communication, but it can be dangerous. It is SO important to keep your information to yourself and always be careful what you say. Never post photos that give away information, once you post something on the internet it's really hard, if not impossible to remove. You can't believe everything you see on the internet. I've learnt all of this from school, but also from talking to other people who have had bad things happen to them on the internet. YOU CAN'T BE TOO CAREFUL!

The internet is not very safe. You should be very careful about what you put on the internet.
People give out lots of personal information and other people can view this information.
Some people think that other people can't see what they have put and think that the internet is safe. They trust people and websites and pop-ups.
This should be changed, so people and kids should know the cautions and on the internet.
People are not who you think they are!
Be Cyber-Safe!!!!!
And know the right and wrong on the internet.
Posted by: band-aid | February 14, 2008 01:05 AM
The internet can be very dangerous, I believe you should not give any personal information.
It should be used wisely because it is open for everyone to use and see.
Make sure you always use a handle, in other words a name other than yours, and never give your email and number to people you do not know.
And remember that if someone asks you something that you do not want them to know then don't tell them.
If you are talking to someone over the internet, they might not be who they say they are.
They might say they are you friend but really it could be a stranger.
Be Careful

So I think all children should be supervised as they are too young to know how unsafe the internet really is.
WE NEED TO MAKE THE CYBER WORLD A SAFER PLACE!
I've learnt to protect myself online by plaing "cyber netrix" an educatunal game to help the youth of the world be aware of the many dangers in cyber space
SO IF I CAN DO IT SO CAN YOU !

If you were online and was talking to someone you do not know then block them or delete them. It is not safe to talk to someone online that is a stranger to you. If they ask you where you live or some sort of question that has to do with you and your family then do not answer and then block them. If they ask you something about yourself, for example, they ask you where you live, you just talk tell them something simple like Australia, Europe, etc...
Posted by: just me | February 14, 2008 01:09 AM
Internet Saftey is crucial to have.
Many teenagers are very stupid and give hundreds of random people their personal details on the internet and in chatrooms such as MSN.
They give out personal details like their name, adress, mobile and home phone numbers.
This means that ANYBODY can track them down.
Some people even give photo's of themselves and post them online.
It is best to keep ALL of your personal information to your self and your friends.
before you talk to your friends on MSN you should make sure that they are your friends. Not someone pretending to be.
Also some people go into websites where you can get anyones MSN adress that has posted it on that site and add them even if you don't know them. You can even add people from other countries and overseas. This can be very dangerous.
People should learn to keep their personal information PERSONAL like it is meant to be and to be cyber-safe.

Internet Blocking is good in a way =] but bad in another way =[. Good because it blocks all the bad and rude sites, but bad because people block all the good sites and games and it can be really annoying sometimes, e.g. at home you find a really good game site or an informative site, then you go to show everyone at school but it doesn’t work. But it Keeps us safe, And it Helps us.

The Internet is great. You can find out info that you need, you can play games and you can chat online. But you have to be careful because if you click on pop ups than it can give personal info away and it can give your computer a virus so becareful online.

Just remember only tell them what u would tell a stranger!
NOTHING PERSONAL!!!

The internet is fun,you can chat and play games but watch out sometimes it's dangerous when you give your personal stuff, sporting clubs and lots more.
Posted by: Cookie Chooky | February 14, 2008 03:11 AM
hey guys&gals
just wanted to talk to you about how important internet safety is. with just one click all of your personal info could be out there for the world to see.Anyone can find out your school where you live anything they want to know. it fun but can be very dangerous! remember if you wouldn't say it to their face you shouldn't say it online.
Posted by: safety junkies | February 14, 2008 03:13 AM
I think The internet is very cool. But your name can easily be on the internet by winning something in sport or achieveing something.
Somethimes the internet can be a very unsafe place, I think if the internet could be more safer people might not know so much about people.
Posted by: Daisy Face | February 14, 2008 03:14 AM
Hi!internet safety is important!really important!things u should never put online are...
1. rumours
2.stuff about other people that rnt true
3.NO wat so ever,personal information about u
4.dont put ur sporting club online
5.No Pictures of anyone you know.
Posted by: Super woman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 | February 14, 2008 03:15 AM
hey =]
we all try our hardest to be intenet safe but there are always ways, what about sporting clubs they may have your name posted on their sights and may have what year you are in and what school you go to it is one freaky world out there but together we can stop all those hackers so we can feel safe again.
always LOve never let out your info
Posted by: Drii =] | February 14, 2008 03:16 AM
i believe that posting stuff on the net is fine unless personal details r written. The net is a gr8 place, u can do really cool stuff on the net like playing games, researching 4 work but using sites where u can give out personal details easily - is so not cool!
Dont give personal details out through the net, cause people can track u through ur internet footprint and it could lead to some serious consequences.
:) :) :)
Posted by: Someone who will not give details out!!!!!!!!! | February 14, 2008 03:17 AM
the internet is great but you always have to be careful about what you say and type. You should never post personal details on the net because people can easily track you down via your online footprint.
Posted by: munchkin | February 14, 2008 03:17 AM
hey
the internet is a great place but if you are not careful then you could come accross a stalker who could track you down.
so just try to be smart and not make a stalker.

I think that it is quite scary that so much can be done to you without you knowing it. A few months ago I saw a news report about a young boy that was teased through utube with videos so i think that the people who own utube should be more careful and maybe check the videos BEFORE they get put on utube.
Posted by: Cookies(&)Cream | February 14, 2008 03:20 AM
Hi,
I think internet saftey is a very important thing to learn about and it is also a very, very important to listen to what people say about it because it can be dangerous if you share too much infomation about yourself online because bad people try and track you down and then you can get hurt
Posted by: molly choco face | February 14, 2008 03:20 AM
If you don't talk to strangers on the street don't talk to them online!
What you won't tell to a stranger on the street don't tell it to a stranger online!
SAFETY IS THE KEY!
Posted by: Dancing Lulu | February 14, 2008 03:20 AM
Hey,
The internet is a great place, but you always need to make sure that you be careful what you say online. Remember not to post any personal information just in case it gives away too much information to track you down! Don't post anything online that you would say to a stranger. Don't say things like, you surname, address or your phone number.
Be cyber safe and always be careful what you post online!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Buttercup | February 14, 2008 03:21 AM
i think that u should never completly put your trust that u meet on the internet come on i wouldnt i dont know why they do i only trust the poeple that i meet at school or places i know that are safe and the internet is lovley thing but dont make friends from it.
Posted by: Joshua | February 14, 2008 03:40 AM
I don’t believe that I am at a very high risk of using the internet unsafely. But I reckon the uniformed should get informed about the safety of the internet. They need to be really careful on the internet because everyone you meet on the net is pretty much a stranger.
But seriously, who in their right mind would give out their own personal information to a complete stranger. I mean you wouldn’t walk up to some random you meet on the street and go “Oh hi there here’s my address and number.” I mean you’re basically just telling them to come and stalk you or something. The internet is as safe as you make it.

i think if you get a bad email and want to prevent it in the future click block sender :)
Posted by: hannah montana | February 14, 2008 04:40 AM
I think that the internet is not a safe place because there can be stalkers and hackers out there that can find you. Also you shall not give out your personal details. THINK SMART ON THE NET!!!

I think that the internet can be safe and unsafe as long as your cearful don't talk to anyone you don't know don't add anyone you don't know and don't give out any personal information then your safe don't be silly on the internet and do something you may regret later.

Hello, I am Pvt.Soap Mctavish , I am very alert of what i do online. I dont think that you should stay away from chat websites or anything like that, but i strongly Reccomend that you dont give personal information away. ( As mensioned in every other blog.) It's really up to you, i am not your parent/guardian but as they can seem to be friends, once they have your trust they can get any personal information of you.In summary...... DONT GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION AWAY!!!!

BUT BE WHERE NEVER GO INTO POP UPS AT ALL !!!!!

i think personally , that people shouldnt be giving alot of detail about themselves on the internet because , anyone can hunt you down . or even stork you . BUT if you dont listen to wot people think thats your own risk if something hapeneing 2 you , but my opinion.. is everyone is aloud to hav a myspace or facebook or website or woteva , as long as there parents kno..and also MAKE SURE YOU KNO WHO YOU ARE TALKING TO , and once again if you dont kno who you are talking to and you find out that this person is a hakker , thats ur folt and problem no one eleses also , i feel that people shouldnt be puting pictures of themsleves on the internet but i they really want to .. then put the photos on private .. also DONT NOT GIVE ANYONE THAT YOU DONT NO, UR MOBILE NUMBER .. thats like walking in the street and going up 2 someone and saying "hi here is ny mobile number " . no one would wanna do that !
Posted by: Anonymous | February 14, 2008 04:48 AM
people dont realise what they are doing on the internet. they think its harmless and nothing like the real world. but it is. same dangers such as being bullyed, or stalked. you dont go and give people your phone number and adress to strangers on the street, so why do it over the internet. you have no idea who you are talking to over the internet its exactly the same by pulling a stranger over and talking to them. there should be someting in the real world that will educate kids about what really could happen on the internet when your not playing it safe.

Hi, I am somebody that has about 5-6 firewalls and virus catchers. But what i have reliazed is that i can get rid off any websites that have popedup or that are a threat. So with virus catchers the iternet isnt such a bad PLACE!

I think the internet at times can be very good for reserch and for loking at websites such as AFL ,EPL,NBA and WWE and alot more.On the other hand it can get you into strife eg: by puting you adress phone number and your fool name.If you Do put any thing like that on there you could find yourself getting stalked. So please don't play the fool and if you do you wiil find yourself on the wrong end of the string because if you talk to people you dno't know they could be anyone and they could be big trouble.

Kids can use it for fun and for school!
It can be a laptop (which i think look really snazzy) that u can take everywhere and u can have a normal computer that is bigger and better for holding games and documents ect. but is also a kids best frinend when it comes to just mucking around and being silly when playing games!!!

The internet is a great tool and a great social network for connecting people together. But it not always safe as there are people that can scam you and/or track you down by the information you provide.
People often give out information about themselves without thinking who might see it and how they might use that information.
Myspace is an example of where large numbers of people give out identifying and personal information about themselves. They put up such things as their names, school, living area, age, where they work, photos of themselves and other personal things. While there is an option to set your profile to private so only certain people can see it, this can easily be hacked by any teenager with computer. Social networks are a large concern in internet safety because you never know who you are talking to or who is seeing your personal information.

i think the internet is the best because it allows me to talk to my friends and it helps me in many ways but you got to be careful not to give your personal details out because there are bad people out there.

SO BE CEARFUL!!!!!

The internet is a great place to be on like game websites and more. My fav is YOUTUBE.

i just need to say i do agree with buttercup you should never trust or talk to any one you dont know and only talk to your friends but the thing is you never if it is your friends either so maybe it is best if you talk but dont plan or say any thing that could get you into danger. I think the internet is best for finding information and pictures for school and also home work but you can also have a little fun on the computer but just to tell you chat rooms and my space is very very damgerous to lots of people. so enjoy the internet becaus i go on msn and talk to different people but not to people i dont no but you can go on because the internet is very important in our lives today......

Sounds like the kids have the right idea and us adults may be over reacting at times on the web safety issue. Exchanging view with others from wherever in th world is so exciting. Sure beats reading a text book and answering the questions at the end of the chapter! It also has to be good for literacy development (and I am glad that spell check is sop universal now).

The internet is not a right it is a privilege so we should use the internet with respect to ourselves and others.
treat others the way you want to be treated yr6

The internet is known as a safe place but is it really? I have had all kinds of people add me on msn I just added them thinking it was my cousin because they had the same name. When I was in Italy my cousin was on msn ad i saw an email address that was from Australia when i read it properly it was my friends next door neighbour nothing is private on the internet. Somehow she managed to get her msn and added her.
Posted by: Tahlia | February 18, 2008 12:18 AM
Dear goat's cheese;; firewalls don't protect you from stalkers and stuff~ People can hack through them.
A firewall is something that protects you from viruses and stuff.
Posted by: MuZZeTTe~!*** { omg bro } lol | February 18, 2008 12:19 AM
On MSN if someone adds you but you don't know them just block them because you don't know what sort of trouble you can yourself into. They could tease you or maybe hack your computer. They could be middle aged men pretending to be a 12 or 13 year old girl, you don't know who they are.
Posted by: nikki | February 18, 2008 12:19 AM
msn can be dangerous because people can hack into your msn address and send things that arent true. As i have had it happen to me, so when u go on the internet dont add ppl coz u want to so u look like u hav alot of friends u dont know who urr adding it could be a 40 yr old man down the street and not ur best friend

I think that kids on the internet should be really careful about what they say on the internet. Keep personal information about you and other people to yourself and keep it a secret.
Posted by: Anonymous | February 18, 2008 12:24 AM
You should be safe on the internet, if everyone was careful and honest. However, there are some that are not. Other people can post information about you without you knowing about it and give out your personal details. So be careful who you give out info to.
One time someone made a website of me and the next morning I had emails the next morning and people where teasing me.
This made me sad and I felt that no one liked me. I was angry that my personal details were given to people i did not know. My privacy had been invaded.
