eSafety in eTwinning projects

The speaker, one of the experts of the European Commission has guided us to understand the risks of the net making us aware of the problem through discussion, experience, stories. It has been interesting for me to know how the European Commission is facing the problem of cyber-bullying which is more widespread than we could think.

Some colleagues have referred some interesting experiences seeing them involved in problems like copyright, using images concerning their pupils, or telling bad stories about an adolescent who committed suicide after having been bullied online. The groups enoyed discussing and exchanging experiences enriching their knowledge about the problem that as etwinners we can’t avoid facing.

Another meaningful moment of the workshop has been devoted to make our students aware of the risks of the social networks . Each group suggested original stories to make our students reflect on the effect of cyber-bullyng, copyright, the unauthorized use of people’s pictures , parental permission to use their children’s photos.
Finally I’d like to point out some useful links for teachers, parents and pupils.

SAFETY IN VIRTUAL SPACES IS NOT A VIRTUAL FEELING

Safety.jpg

We may be increasingly interacting on virtual spaces, but safety is definitively not a virtual feeling. At the workshops of 14 February a motivated audience of teachers and National Support Structures from 22 different European countries expressed qualities they associate with safety.

A long list was written out on the flip-chart to serve as our outlook for the sessions:

eSafety in virtual spaces

It was great to attend this morning’s workshop on eSafety in Virtual spaces. Of course, eSafety is a big concern for all teachers and the responsibilities involved in protecting our kids from exposure to the nastier side of the wonderful wonderful web can be pretty daunting at the best of times.

A lot of the parents of children we teach only hear about the dangers of the Internet when something goes wrong. Whether it involves the dangers of cyber-bullying or Internet grooming, what happens on the Internet all too often ends up being the fodder of scandal sheets or reactionary tabloids.

It’s much more exciting to imagine all the possible dangers of giving kids access to the Internet, than the more sedate reality of the millions of interactions that happen online every week and are completely innocuous. However, I think that we, as educators, need to be aware of the things that can go wrong. Perhaps, we should have some guidelines on Internet safety on the eTwinning portal itself? Or a check-list of do’s and don’ts that teachers can refer to before starting work on their eTwinning projects? Of course, our kids need to learn how to work with the Internet responsibly, but we still have a responsibility to protect them from potentially disturbing visual images or text.

eBezpieczeństwo I eTwinning

“Przemoc internetowa i bezpośrednia między znajomymi jest najczęstszą przyczyną kompleksów”
Ten cytat, z końcowego raportu na temat bezpieczeństwa internetowego dla Multi-State Working Group, był myślą przewodnią przez całe warsztaty.

eSafety and eTwinning

“Bullying and harassment, most often by peers, are the most frequent threats that minors face, both online and offline.”
This quote taken from the final report of the internet safety technical taskforce to the Multi-State Working Group was the leading thought of this workshop.
