For your information, please read below

Dear Petru,

Would you, please, share this letter with my eu colleagues from different EUN projects, or with a broader eu teachers' community.
It is really high pressure these days on BG teachers.
For the first time they came in the streets, classrooms are empty - about 70 percent national wide.
Most BG people are supporting our just demands, but the media twist the truth.
I will be really grateful for any supporting word.

Dear colleagues and friends,

BG teachers went on national wide strike 5 days ago.

We fight for
much higher budget for BG education,
new conditions in Bg schools,
and decent salaries for bg teachers
- now 150 euro per a month.
(If you can imagine...:-( ... )

We are all compelled to stay 8 hours at school so that the strike is legal.
After that we go on meetings and demonstrations.

Our government haven't shown so far any sign of good will to solve the problems and say
that we want to destroy national budget.

We will appreciate any kind of support!

THANK YOU!

Best wishes from Sofia -

Call for teachers (EN to FR, DE, IT and ES)

European Schoolnet manages a project called MELT (http://melt.eun.org) that aims to make available to schools thousands of free learning resources in several European languages. People can then add comments and tags, rate and save them as bookmarks and share them with others.

Part of the work within the project is to provide translations of existing English metadata of learning resources. Metadata in this context is a description of a learning resource that allows people to search more effectively.

The required translations will be made from English into French, German, Italian and Spanish.

The translated metadata will become part of the European Learning Resource Exchange Repository (a large data base of learning resources) which will allow users to search for learning resources from all across Europe.

For that purpose we are looking for teachers who:

• Have some experience with metadata or indexing

• have a very good comprehension of written and spoken English in order communicate with us and

• understand English metadata

• can translate metadata into one of the languages mentioned above

The translation process is to start in mid September 2007 and will finish at the end of October 2007.

The number of resources each teacher would need to translate is about 250. We assume that four metadata sets can be translated in an hour. This would require a teacher to spend about eight full days (8h a day) or three to four weeks part-time. An online tool will be provided by EUN to translate the metadata sets. The tool is easy to use and EUN will provide some online assistance.

The selected teachers are expected to perform the following tasks:

• translate a minimum of 250 metadata sets from English into French, German, Italian or Spanish

• perform this task until the end of October 2007

• deliver high quality translations

EUN will pay each teacher EURO 2.50 per translated metadata set. A total of 11 teachers will be recruited to cover the above mentioned languages: French, Italian, German and Spanish.

Interested to get involved in such a job? Please send your CV to Thomas Maier at the following email address: thomas.maier@eun.org

We could collect some items, goods, pens, pencils, food and etc.
to send to our twinning school (Petru, just connect us please with
school in Greece who needs help).
If pupils and parents ,teachers need some medicine we could collect
it as well .(if our partners will need to stay in our families i
could a make a report at the local TV to mobilize local people to
help). Hope to hear from you.We know that real friends should come
to help and support in the trouble times.

Vladimir

I have read that flames licked the edges of the original Olympic stadium and that in some small villages around people are putting out the fire with their own hands because of the lack of water, .... this is really very sad and terrible !

I am a teacher and I do agree with you when you say that " it is vital for every European citizen to get informed and sensitized". Furthermore I want to inform you that from 2003-2006 my school , together with other european partners (from Cyprus,Poland,Spain) took part in a Comenius project work dealing with sport, education and culture: "Olympism and Education in the field of sport". The main aim of that project was to highlight how sport and education could represent the joined-up topics to develop universal values such as solidarity, friendship, tolerance, and a lot of materials was produced by the kids. (a calendar : CalendOlimpia2004, a CD-rom "The Olympics in ancient Greece", a DVD : OVA 2005(Olympic Value Awards). You can have a look at the school website: www.cardarelli-massaua.it (click on English website).

Now I think that we( kids, colleagues, the school community) should reflect on the event that struck your country in order to promote and develop the European citizenship and/or brotherhood.

We, as Italians, could start from the famous saying : "one face one race".

Re: [Myeurope] Greece burnt!:To Stergios Nastopoulos and Eleni Papadopoulou

Dear Colleagues,
I want to suggest you that your initiative to collect materials for the Greek children could be
extended to other European countries/schools/communities. I think it could be sensible to involve my kids
as well as the school community to take an active part in this sort of cooperation.
I am really interested to know more information and details about that, since I can't understand Greek.
I teach in a comprehensive school in Milan, north-west of Italy, with kids from the age of 5 to 13 years old.
The school website is : www.cardarelli-massaua.it
Hope to hear from you soon,

Re: [Myeurope] Greece burnt!

Algeria has also experienced a lot of wild fires, even more than Greece, but the media did not mention them a lot...Some are still burning right now, people have died.
The same thing happens in Southern France as well, why ? Because land owners do not clean their forests. In the past they used goats are wild fires were very rare. The forest are no longer cleaned abd people have trees and bushes that are too close to the houses.
I understand why people complain, but why were they not more careful, these tragedy could have been avoided if landowners tended their lands and used fire stops (wide tracks were nothing is grown to stop a fire) Fire burn if there is something to burn.
We should also mention land developers who arson to get cheap land to build on them !!!
All the best from the sunny Pyrenees.

Romania is very sorry

I am Rodica Fesnic from Romania. I saw on TV a lot of about the disaster that struck Greece. I am very sorry about what happened to your country and your people. Last year almost our country, and this year a part of it, was devastated by water so I can understand what you are going through. We believe that all these are consequences of the climate change and we can't think that any person could be so bad to start a fire on purpose.
We start school on the 17th of September and of course I will draw my pupils attention on this tragic event.
My best regards,
Rodica.

Re: [Myeurope] Greece burnt!

I do share every word Janos wrote and I thank him for having expressed our feelings so well!
I even tried to get in touch with The Spring Day Greek National Liaison , Elena, I know was on one of the islands caught on fire, but no news from her and I am anxiously waiting for some.
A part from this personal note, I think we have to do something.
Italy too , in the South, underwent the same horrible experience and I can witness fires on the mountains around my village. I can add a few comments, out of the experience I lived:
1) in the 60s our hills and mountains were covered with trees in a huge campaign of forestation , the trees that were planted were pine trees, above all cluster pines, maritime trees that don't belong to our environment. This kind of trees, full of resin, is perfect if you want to destroy a wood....... and even more all the "needles" that fall from the trees constitute an ideal dried carpet to get on fire. It would have been very different if birches, acacias, or similar plants had been planted, instead.
2) helicopters and Canadairs poured tons of water during the day and they were very busy . At the sunset, as soon as they finished, flames started again and went on during the night , when it wasn't possible to do anything because of the darkness. So, I wandered if it was worthwhile to spend huge amounts of money when you could see there was such a plan behind. Was there, eventually, any economic interest on the part of pilots and companies and organizations that gained from the fires?
We have to provoke a conscious revolt to this situation on the part of school educators and pupils, and propose a series of solutions in order to avoid other disasters.
The lack of rains is another fundamental factor, here in my region it hasn't rained for months and I live in central Italy, imagine southern parts! Every thing is dried out.

looking forward to other feedback to Janos's clever email
all the best
Irene

Your message sent to the MyEurope list struck a chord with me and I am absolutely positive that with many other MyEurope readers as well.
In fact, now I feel a bit ashamed of not having expressed earlier my feelings and thoughts concerning the unprecedented ecological disaster that hit your country.
First of all, my deepest condolences go out to the victims of the tragic forest fires and to all those people who have been directly affected by the wildfires.
No doubt, Greece, the cradle of European civilization has been undergoing a very hard time recently.
One of the main reasons of this large-scale ecological catastrophy is undoubtedly the climate change triggered by global warming.
At this point I must admit that I am very glad that I actively took part in the "Energy is our Future" EUN project (http://www.futurenergia.org) last year and that I could spread information about this burning issue here in my country and that I could get students from all corners of Hungary engaged in different awareness raising activities. I am very happy to know that the project in question will be carried on.
Nevertheless, my understanding is that another possible cause for the disaster is the activity of some evil people, and arsons are believed to be behind the fires. It seems that the arsonists’ main goal was to destroy our civilization and to bring about great devastation. I just find no words to comment on this.
I have heard about the evacuation of villages by air, and the setting-up of "environmental refugee" camps.
I think we teachers should try to do our best to show our solidarity and to help somehow to ease the aftermath of the ecological catastrophe.
I am sure there will be a new section opened either at the Myeurope site or at the "Energy is our Future" site where for example a comprehensive list will explain students what events can lead up to such disasters and what people can do to help.
I also think that a special section/project on the Olympic Games should be launched at the EUN website in order to call upon the youth of Europe and the world to be mentally/spiritually prepared for the upcoming Olympics.
As we all know the original Olympic Games began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. I fully believe that we educators do great service to our world if we make students aware of the myths and legends surrounding the origin of the ancient Games and bring close to them the ideas and ideals of this great sporting event.
I will soon get back to this list with my project ideas or with my concrete project proposal.
Thank you for your attention.
Finally, let me wish you all a successful and eventful school year.

Best regards,

Janos Blasszauer

Was watching that news on TV with breaking heart, but didnt know that it was

We were discussing the problem in July about coming heat because of climate

I send my deep compassion for the people of Greece who lost their relatives
or houses it is terrible.

RE : [Myeurope] Greece burnt!

I have just read the message you sent to Petru and I'm sure that teachers in my school will be interested in making this a focal point of environmental work we do. The problem is shared in common, even if the scale of what has happened in Greece is mind-boggling. We already do international work with some informal partner schools in Greece, especially (and more formally) with the German School in Athens and Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, but I'd like to talk about your twinning and especially, e-twinning ideas with colleagues next week at school, where we have a commitment to a reafforestation project locally here. Given the drought, I'm sure our students invovled have had quite a few problems in keeping their saplings alive this summer, and I'm not sure what has happened there. As you say, the whole lesson in this has to be vastly increased awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and of the high, too often tragic dangers we run when we destroy it.
Our school is for 4 year olds through to graduation at 19. We now have 1,100 students and are growing as a new school. The curriculum and teaching are 50% in English. All sicence lessons for example, are taught through English. Our webiste (mostly in Turkish however) is at: www.hevokullari.k12.tr
I am the teacher responsible for international contacts, Model United Nations and EU projects.
I agree with the politicians who have said that neighbouring countries MUST co-operate very closely, the more urgently so when issues concern the environment. Political borders won't stop fires from crossing them, whatever nationalist politicians may think or wish!
In expressing our solidarity with you, it would be good if we could work together with our students on reducing the dangers of such disasters and improving the desire amongst our youngsters to care for it with responsibility.
Wishing you well and all success to these ideas, as well as swift renewal for the huge areas so appallingly destroyed.

Greece burnt!

Dear Petru,
You have been informed of course about the terrible environmental disaster that hurt my country, Greece this summer. Specially the fires in Peloponnese destroyed an area as large as one half of Belgium. Huge areas of forests, villages and cultivations. An important archeological site, as Ancient Olympia has run a risk and the surroundings were burnt. Ash is all that remained after the fire. People dead, people without having anything. After this event that is the most important environmental catastrophe of history in Europe, it is vital for every European citizen to get informed and sensitized. Obviously all these are the consequences of the climate change of these last years. We, as teachers, have the task not only to inform our students about this catastrophe, but also to help. I think that this forum can do something for this. Debates can be organized to exchange ideas. Data about the schools burnt and students who need help, twinning of schools or e-twinning. European teachers must show their solidarity to my poor destroyed fellow-countrymen, colleagues and students.

Please, help!

I know that your opinion and contribution is invaluable in this difficulty. I hope my request can touch every heart.

My best regards
