Do It Yourself! - Atomic Force Microscope
Now we show to you, how to make an AFM microscope from ’only’ a dead DVD burner .
The AFM is a microscope, what uses an extremely small pin to create the picture.
Its scan the top of the sample.
Dead DVD burner
First you get a DVD burner.
Also you have some tools like screwdrivers and tweezers.
Diassamble the burner, and carefully remove the burning head.
When you are done you can disassemble the head. Be careful its contains very fragile components.
You have to have tools for tiny things.
Lets disassamble the head:
First you remove the focusing lens, it is the tiny lens with a coil and two strong magnets:
When you removed that you find another lens.
Be careful the lenses are made of plastic they are extremely sensiteive for touch.
When you remove the lens you have to catch the edge of the lens!
If you are done you can protect the lens with Scotch tape because it is very clean.
Now remove everything of the head:
And place in a screw to the main hole.
Cut off three or two plastic strip of a bottle or a package like this:
Put on each other the three/two plastic trips and hole it.
So draw in a cooper wire and place a neomdyium magnet between the plastic strips:
You can find in the focusing lens instrument…
Wrap the cooper wire to the magnet placed in strips:
Have another wire to secure the magnet because its can fall off the strips.
When you are done it should look like:
Now you have a small mirror, you can find one or two mirror in the head its ideal for this work. You can secure it with epoxy.
Place to the top of the magnet placed in strips and put another hole with a sharp thing of the strip.
Well, place the strip pack to the screw like this:
So put under two magnets with the same pole of the scanning head(magnet placed in strip) they should repuls the head.
Now get a laser, you can buy a chinese laser pointer or remove of an instrument.
Place the laser to the head too, its have to point to the mirror.
Also place a measuring table in front of the laser.
If you turn on the laser it should point to the mirror and reflect to the measuring table(millimetre paper)

Oh and i almost forgott he batteries three button cells are right.
And turn on the instrument. So take a photo with a long shutter speed. During you take the photo, you have to move the head with the laser and the measuring table.
The two magnets are repulse the small magnet in the head. When the small magnet is moving the mirror is bouncing the laser beam and point to different paces on the measuring table.
So it scans the magnetic field.

The two laser peak is the peak of the magnetic field.
The real AFM works too of this theorem. But the real AFMs pin is repulse any atoms
