Prisons in Crisis
Public confidence in the prison system is not helped by the inhumane conditions to which prisoners are exposed as we have recently watched on TV. Prisoners who have suffered unjust treatment while serving their sentences are hardly candidates to reabilitation. From my point of view, the purpose of the penal system is, not to reabilitate, but to keep criminals away from the rest of society. That´s the core of the problem- the mind-set of the prison system towards these men. While it may be true that incarcelation alone does not instill new values my question is: Is real reform possible? And if so, what types of programmes are being carried out to rehabilitate criminals in order to teach them to be law-abiding and productive after their release?.
